A new research funding programme piloted by the European Commission, with a view to developing innovative businesses, is expected to benefit young graduates who are looking forward to challenging careers in scientific and industrial research.
Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, said that the project will generate 174,000 high-profile jobs across the EU countries.
Among the areas of specific focus will be climate change, environmental services, biotechnology, energy efficiency and healthcare.
Innovation and scientific research need to be converted into employment opportunities as soon as possible so as to make the maximum use of human resources for industrial development, the EU said.
Ireland has already taken 300 million euro from the EU fund, which it plans to use for the development of universities, research organisations and industry.
