A global software firm is hiring around 250 graduates for its expanding operation in Ireland.

VMware's announcement of additional high-value jobs across the two sites in Ballincollig, Co Cork was hailed by Jobs Minister Richard Bruton, who said that Ireland is "on the right track".

"However, we must do more, and I have a plan for a series of measures across a range of sectors, including cloud computing, to hit ambitious targets and get people back to work," Mr Bruton added.

Silicon Valley's VMware, which already has 550 workers at its Irish base, develops software which helps companies use cloud computing to reduce costs and transform their IT business.

The majority of the new jobs in Cork will be high-value customer support and sales specialists, the firm said.

VMware's country manager Ian Moore said: "The Cork region is well established as a focus for dynamic IT companies and the area is well-known for its strong heritage in supporting global technology brands."

He added: "Developing our Cork operations means we have more scope for creating new jobs for enthusiastic and energetic people with a wide range of skill sets."
