Training & Profiles
Around 50 graduates join this 18 month programme every year, and we expect all of them to evolve into leaders and professional experts of the future. Specialising in engineering or in commercial operations, you’ll enjoy carefully chosen placements, a well-established support network and professional development which includes formal study towards professional qualifications (where applicable).
Technical
Based in one of our engineering teams, you’ll undertake three placements, each designed to develop your skills and give you a broad insight into our work. We’ll also support you to achieving chartered status in your chosen discipline. You should be studying either a BEng or MEng in an Engineering or Physics discipline and be on-line to achieve a 2.2 or above.
Commercial
As well as ‘trading’ energy and providing our services to industry partners, we also manage huge 3rd party contracts and a large portfolio of property and business acquisitions. All of which means there are plenty of careers open to you. Where applicable, we’ll support study towards professional qualifications. We look for a 2:1 degree, ideally in an Engineering or Business related discipline. However, we will consider other subjects, depending on the exact areas we’re recruiting into.

Actually on the grad scheme I had three six-month placements – the first was in electricity asset policy, looking at substation assets; my second placement was in demand forecasting and my third placement was actually a commercial placement which I was a bit nervous about but it has set me up really well for my first post engineering role.

Information & FAQ
- What is the salary?
- A starting salary of £24,750 for those candidates with a bachelors degree ( or equivalent) or £25,750 for those with a Masters degree, plus a £2,000 welcome payment and £200 per month accommodation allowance whilst on the programme.
- Where can I be expected to be located on the graduate programme?
- It's difficult to say at the moment. We would ask you to be flexible for the duration of the programme to enable you to take up the variety of opportunities that are on offer.
- How many places are you recruiting for this year and how many applications do you typically receive?
- We are recruiting approximately 50 graduates this year across the technical and commercial disciplines. Applications have been in excess of 3,000 in the past.
- What competencies do you look for at National Grid?
- For each of our development programmes, we have four key competencies: Developing Self, Planning to Achieve, Business & Strategic Awareness and Building Relationships.
