FDM Group - Leanne Lawrence

Name: Leanne Lawrence
Job Title: Project Analyst
Company: FDM Group
Sectors: Banking, Finance

How did you find the application and interview process for your job?

Whilst the application process was straightforward and quite easy to follow, the interview proved a little more challenging. The initial interview process was group based and it was important to present myself in a professional manner and make attempts to stand out from the other applicants. I felt that the interview set the precedence and prepared me well for working in a professional environment, consisting of group activities, logical reasoning evaluations and also a presentation on a technically based subject.

Why did you decide to work in this industry?

I had always considered working in the banking industry but had not really paid great attention to IT. It was during my university studies that I came across FDM and their training programme and was greatly intrigued by how I could combine project management, banking and IT. The training programme and subsequently my current role, fuses three of these great business entities. The world of IT is constantly expanding with technological advances and processes being developed daily. Information Technology is a crucial element of every business, which not only drives innovation but is also exciting to be a part of.

What do you enjoy most about working in this industry?

I enjoy the diversity of working within banking and IT; no two days are ever the same. For someone who likes challenges, this role keeps me on my toes enabling me to turn the theoretical training that I have received into reality.

What have you struggled most with since starting you career, and do you have any advice on how to overcome it?

The working routine is very different to the routine adopted whilst studying. Having been in full time education since the age of four, I almost became accustomed to things being done in a certain way. In some respects you are dependent on your lecturers or teachers for guidance and reassurance that you are progressing in the right direction. However, I was soon able to overcome this and quickly understood that ultimately, only I was accountable for the decisions that I made. I would say that being both assertive and proactive were key attributes towards overcoming this.

Do you feel diversity is an issue in the Industry you work in?

There is an evident lack of women within IT, especially in the banking industry; but whilst this is prominent, I don’t feel that it is an issue for me. I believe that any barrier in life can be overcome. What should differentiate you from the next person is not gender or ethnicity, but how well you can consistently do the job required of you and your ability to exceed expectations.

What's the best career advice you've ever received?

'Make your job indispensable.' This is something that has remained with me throughout my career and is extremely invaluable advice. Ensure that you know your role inside out, be innovative and differentiate yourselves from your colleagues, making sure that the way you perform your role is significant and makes a difference to the department/organisation. Do this and you’ll have a job for life.

What advice would you give to other aspiring graduates looking to work in your field?

Be professional and give your best, not just in your day to day work but through your mannerisms, appearance and communications, you never know who is watching you.
