Hardware and Mechatronics Engineering Undergraduate Programme

Details

Description

Duration: 12 months.

Location: Gaydon, Whitley, Fen End, or The National Automotive Innovation Centre (NAIC) at Warwick University.

Hybrid working is potentially available, depending on the area and manager.

Jaguar Land Rover is a multi-site business and you’ll be required to spend time working with different departments at several locations.

On successful completion of the undergraduate programme, you will be considered for a place on one of our graduate programmes. If you are to be offered a place on the graduate programme you will be informed shortly after completing your placement. You would join the graduate programme in the September of the year in which you graduate.

We are the future of modern luxury

We are the pioneers creating the next-generation of outstanding vehicles, founded on modern luxury. Each and every one of us are shaping the exceptional with soul. We are reimagining the driving of tomorrow and redefining what’s possible.

We are the future of movement.

We can’t wait to see what you can do with us.

Hardware and Mechatronics Engineering

Hardware and Mechatronics are at the heart of all Jaguar Land Rover vehicles and fundamental to how we address evolving engineering challenges. Our vehicle dynamics and off-road capability really sets us apart, but we also focus on Noise Vibration Harshness (NVH), door systems, headlamps, glazing and seats, with a remit spanning mechanical design, integration and systems engineering.

Our mission is to deliver outstanding customer experiences. This is supported by the creative and innovative skills of our people as well as the range of tools and processes we use. Failure mode and effect analysis are fundamental to providing safety-critical, high-performing and high-quality systems for our customers. Throughout the design and verification process, you will utilise both Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) toolsets to deliver the engineering specifications, with world-class system engineering tools to assist you in designing electromechanical control systems.

On the Hardware & Mechatronics Undergraduate Programme you could work in one of the following departments: Engineering Body Chassis (EBC), Engineering Vehicle (EV), Engineering Operations (EO), Engineering Research (ER) or Special Vehicle Operations (SVO). You will be allocated to a department based on personal preferences and business need.

Engineering Body Chassis (EBC)

The Engineering Body Chassis department is responsible for most of what you see and touch in our cars. We work closely with design studios to translate award-winning concepts into engineering reality, factoring in performance, manufacturability, sustainability, cost and weight. Our remit spans lids, doors, structures, cabin and safety, cockpit, climate, seats, exteriors, lighting, glazing and roofs.

From day one, you will be personally responsible for developing real-world engineering solutions. You will learn tools, engineering methodologies and techniques to create and optimise engineering solutions that will enrich your capability, raise your profile and accelerate your development as an engineer.

Engineering Vehicle (EV)

Being able to go anywhere and do anything is right at the heart of a Land Rover. Our role is to ensure our vehicles can handle anything our customers may throw at them – wherever they are in the world. This means that our engineering undergraduates learn to apply fundamental knowledge, vehicle test techniques and virtual tools to reduce weight and improve range so our drivers can go off-road and live life to the full.

Undergraduate engineers in durability and robustness could find themselves involved in driven testing, structural durability using six degree of freedom whole vehicle rigs, driver robustness studies or accelerated corrosion tests.

Recent vehicle efficiency undergraduates have helped us develop control systems to improve the way our vehicles manage thermal energy, investigated the use of advanced unsteady aerodynamic simulation methods to help us understand how to keep vehicle sensors clean, and explored the aerodynamics of towing with electric vehicles. Your time with us could take you anywhere.

Engineering Operations (EO)

Engineering Operations underpins technical innovation and product delivery with engineering expertise, tools and processes plus specialist technical services. We are a diverse team that harnesses a variety of skill sets, from information management and data analytics to building and testing prototypes.

Fundamentally involved at every stage of the process, we are driving an exciting transformation in the way we engineer and deliver our products with class-leading technology and quality. You could find yourself operating as a component & system test engineer, scrum master, production systems control engineer or a test & methodology controls engineer. Every role will give you an exceptional opportunity to gain hands-on experience on business-critical projects.

Engineering Research (ER)

Engineering Research covers all the different engineering elements that make up the car in the early stages of discovery, feasibility and invention. The team focuses on solving difficult scientific and engineering problems, undertaking technical feasibility studies, building prototypes (both physical and software), and creating proof of concepts. The team drives about a third of new innovation patents for Jaguar Land Rover and is at the heart of our innovative business.

Special Vehicle Operations (SVO)

SVO is responsible for the most luxurious and specialist vehicles within the premium brands of Jaguar and Land Rover. Home to diverse business areas and skill sets, SVO will give you a breadth of experience during the undergraduate programme to suit your interests and abilities.

Our remit spans everything from suspension tuneable and suspension architecture to brakes, steering, wheels and tyres, motion controls, Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) structural analysis and multibody simulation. Within the chassis SVO team, you will experience these diverse engineering disciplines and find a role you love. Along the way, you'll be guided by experienced engineers to apply innovative technologies to develop solutions for world-class products.

What’s required?

You will need to hold or be on track to achieve at least a 2.2 degree in mechanical, electronic, software, chemical, aeronautical, automotive, materials, environmental or aerospace engineering; computer science, mechatronics, maths or physics.

You will have a real passion for problem solving and the curiosity to understand business challenges and deliver innovative solutions. You will also have strong numerical and interpersonal skills and the confidence to champion new initiatives.

Please note that our undergraduate placement opportunities are open only to penultimate-year students (those who will be returning to their final year of study after their placement with us). All our undergraduate programmes have a fixed start date, commencing 3 July 2023.

Rewards and benefits

We haven’t yet confirmed our 2023 undergraduate programme salary, but in 2022 this was £19,452. You’ll also enjoy 26 days’ holiday, a discounted car purchase and lease scheme for you and your family, an excellent pension scheme and access to a wide range of deals and discounts from retailers and sports clubs.
