Propulsion Engineering Graduate Programme

Fossil fuels have dominated automotive propulsion since cars were introduced, but our priorities are now very different. By the middle of the decade, Jaguar will have undergone a renaissance to emerge as a pure-electric luxury brand – and you have the opportunity to help shape this. You will become a key part of the team, working in multiple departments across your two years, helping you develop a well-rounded understanding of the business.
Learning what it takes to deliver the high-quality propulsion systems of the future, you will evolve into an experienced member of the propulsion engineering community. To develop your skills and competencies, you will work in a range of different environments using a mixture of engineering tools such as Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) and Computer Aided Design (CAD) plus data analysis techniques while working closely with customer groups. The scheme will also feature a number of placements, including one non-product rotation, and you will collaborate closely with your managers to identify placements suitable for your learning and growth.
Your placements will help you develop your technical knowledge at either component or system level, from design to the operation of fully electric propulsion systems. Along the way, you will gain a full understanding of conceptualisation, design, development, optimisation and delivery for world-class components and systems.
In particular, you will gain a systems view of the entire delivery landscape for commodities and/or systems and will work closely with our programme management, external engineering service provider, Jaguar engineering, purchasing and manufacturing functions as critical supply partners to create and deliver final completed products to quality, cost and time targets. We will look to you to bring a fresh mindset to everything we do and actively challenge the way we think.
On the Propulsion Graduate Programme, you could work in one of the following departments: Engineering Operations (EO), Engineering Powertrain (EP), Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) or Reimagine Jaguar. You will be allocated to a department based on personal preferences and business need.
Engineering Operations (EO)
Engineering Operations underpins technical innovation and product delivery with engineering expertise, tools and processes plus specialist technical services. We are a diverse team that harnesses a variety of skill sets, from information management and data analytics to building and testing prototypes.
Fundamentally involved at every stage of the process, we are driving an exciting transformation in the way we engineer and deliver our products with class-leading technology and quality. Whether you work with us as a project management engineer, test engineer or battery materials scientist, you will have a key part to play in delivering engineering innovations, enhancing our technical knowledge and developing new materials and approaches.
Engineering Powertrain (EP)
Exploring the enormous potential of future propulsion systems, you will deliver solutions that meet the needs of today’s drivers and tomorrow’s world. In short, you will be central to ensuring our future as a leading provider of premium sustainable electrified vehicles, helping us reach Destination Zero by 2039.
We will look to you to develop the engines, transmissions, drivelines, batteries, electric motors, hydrogen storage and fuel cells of the future. You could find yourself specialising in concept design and validation, electric drive units, batteries, energy or thermal management, with expert guidance from experienced engineers to make you a world-class professional. In return, you will help to ensure that tomorrow’s Jaguar Land Rover vehicles offer the best capability in all environments whilst delivering an outstanding experience to our customers.
Special Vehicle Operations (SVO)
SVO is responsible for the most luxurious and specialist vehicles within the premium brands of Jaguar and Land Rover. Home to diverse business areas and skill sets, SVO will give you a breadth of experience during the graduate programme to suit your interests and abilities.
Working within the SVO Propulsion team, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of powertrain commodities and halo vehicle programmes including electrification – something that few other employers in the UK can offer. In addition, you will have the opportunity to experience other engineering areas within SVO, including chassis and vehicle engineering. For example, you could find yourself working with simulation tools to specify future powertrains or developing technical solutions with partners or tier 1 suppliers for our key commodities including internal combustion engines (ICE), transmissions, cooling systems, batteries and electric machines.
The Reimagine Jaguar division is responsible for product strategy, product engineering, programme delivery and product lifecycles for all our new Jaguar products. The propulsion team leads the development of class-leading electric propulsion systems in conjunction with our external powertrain and engineering partners, utilising some of the most advanced techniques, facilities and knowledge to stay ahead of the competition, understand and predict customer demand, and respond quickly to changing technological and environmental and legislative factors. Key projects could include preparing content for review by product directors, generating new technical ideas for issues resolution and building, testing and supporting prototypes.
You will need to hold or be on track to achieve at least a 2.2 degree in mechanical or automotive design, systems computer aided engineering, chemistry, physics or computer science.
You will have a real passion for problem solving and the curiosity to understand business challenges and deliver innovative solutions. You will also have strong numerical and interpersonal skills and the confidence to champion new initiatives.
Rewards and benefits
We haven’t yet confirmed our 2023 graduate programme salary, but in 2022 this was £29,000.
