Bringing fresh perspectives to Intelligence.

GCHQ, MI5 and MI6 are the UK’s Intelligence Services. We work together to safeguard the UK’s people, interests and businesses from various threats at home, overseas and online, including cyber-attacks, espionage, terrorism, and organised crime.  Through the ingenuity of our people, we gather secret intelligence and work closely with our partners in the UK and overseas to detect threats and work out ways to stop them.

We need people with a huge range of talents and perspectives to be successful. Increasing the diversity of our workforce is more important than ever, which is why we’re running this Summer Intelligence Internship. Whichever agency you choose, you’ll be valued and have huge impact.

Join us as an Intelligence Intern and you’ll enjoy a summer like no other, where your unique perspectives and opinions will really matter. You’ll learn all about us – and discover new things about yourself. Over 10 to 11 weeks, you’ll become a real member of the team and contribute to core missions. Whether you choose GCHQ, MI5 or MI6, you’ll see how front-line operations are run, piece together intelligence and create a picture of possible threats. And by the end of the internship, you’ll understand the part each organisation plays in protecting national security. What’s more, your confidence and skills will have excelled.

It's an opportunity to gain a truly unique insight into our work and how you can be part of it. With constant support, you’ll contribute to creating strategies, explain risks to a range of audiences and work in a friendly, multi-disciplinary team. Mentors, managers and buddies will be on-hand to help you get the most out of your experience, which could lead to a hugely meaningful and fulfilling career. As the internship ends, you’ll get the chance to apply for a permanent position at your chosen agency.

So, who are we looking for? You’ll need to be in your penultimate or final year of university studying any degree, and come from a Black, Asian or ethnic minority background. You’ll also need to be from a socially or economically disadvantaged background; not sure if that’s you? Find more information on our website.

Naturally curious? Love working with (and learning from) others? A real team player? Well then, you’ve already got the core skills we’re looking for. At GCHQ, you’ll have a genuine passion for data, analysis and what it can reveal. To work for MI5, we’re after inquisitive problem solvers with enthusiasm and team spirit. And at MI6, you’ll need an interest in different cultures and be keen to understand what makes people tick, as well as being able to demonstrate sound judgement and communication skills. Most importantly, we’re all after people who are ready to unlock their potential and have a positive impact on the UK.

The GCHQ internship will run from Monday 01 July 2024 to Friday 06 September 2024 in Cheltenham. The MI5 and MI6 internships will run from Monday 17 June 2024 to Friday 30 August 2024 in London. You’ll get a competitive salary and five days’ annual leave. Plus, we offer free accommodation for the duration of your time with us, if required. And of course, you’ll be part of the team – so you’ll be free to enjoy organisation-wide events, as well as our clubs and societies, where you can learn and network. What’s more, you’ll have an experience you’ll never forget.

Please note that you’ll need to pass security checks – your placement will depend on this.
