Working with the Environment Agency means working for our world. We’re an executive body of government that tackles environmental issues of national and international importance, ranging from flood defences to water quality, industry regulation, conservation and much more. Whether you’re joining as a graduate or an apprentice, this is a real chance to help protect and improve the environment while gaining exceptional experience in your specialism. Join us and start a career for change.

As a member of our Water Resources team, you will have the chance to gain sector-leading experience while completing your degree. Ideally coming from an environmental science course, you will have completed a minimum of two years of your studies, though you will not be due to graduate before the summer of 2022. Over the 12-month duration of the placement, you will also be working with sector experts who are ensuring the right investments are being made to protect and enhance the environment, both now and in the long-term.

Working with the support of a wide array of key organisations and stakeholders such as Water Quality colleagues, the Evidence Delivery team, Account Managers and Environment Programme teams, you will learn how collaborative partnerships result in a positive impact on the environment that is worth billions of pounds every year. While no two days will ever be the same, you can expect to analyse and manipulate data, and convert evidence and data trends into simple communication tools that will influence the way water companies are working. In fact, this engagement with water companies will play a considerable role in your working experiences with us, as it is imperative that these companies have put plans in place to secure a safe and secure supply of water both now and in the future. Getting directly involved in technical projects in which you will learn and refine key technical skills, you will gain a fascinating insight into the water sector.

This is an exciting chance to become an invaluable team-member in cutting-edge projects. You will benefit from plenty of support from experienced colleagues who will mentor you over the course of the year, so it is vital that you bring a can-do approach to all that you do, and that you have a team-player attitude. With well-developed verbal and written communication skills, you will have a good degree of computer literacy, and you will understand the nuances of data management. With good analytical capabilities, you will be keen to come up with creative solutions to complex challenges, and you will be highly motivated with the capacity to manage your own workload and take the initiative in projects.

We make sure to support each other as we work hard to protect and improve the environment. That means everything from getting real opportunities to grow your skills to benefitting from outstanding coaches and mentors. On top of this, you’ll get access to our great benefits package, such as generous annual leave, an excellent pension, all kinds of flexible working arrangements, a variety of staff networks and travel and childcare allowances. We recognise the challenges that people with (multiple) protected characteristics may experience on the job market. We are fully committed to being an inclusive employer and ensuring equal opportunities. We are keen to make our workforce as diverse as possible, and we hope to attract applications from underrepresented groups, including Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) people, people with a disability, and people with gender diverse identities.
